April 30, 2016: Children's Day 2016 (Mexico, Columbia)

In Mexico, Children's Day ("Día Del Niño") is celebrated April 30. On this day teachers in schools organize the day for their children. In some schools, lessons are suspended for the day. They organize games, music, and the children bring in their favorite foods to share with others. Some families also have a day out with their children. There are special activities for the children in parks and sports centers. Sometimes, also, the children will be given presents by their families. This is the day when children are honored in Mexico.


April 30, 2016: Claude Shannon’s 100th birthday

Claude Elwood Shannon (April 30, 1916 – February 24, 2001) was an American mathematician, electrical engineer, and cryptographer known as "the father of information theory". Shannon was famous for having founded information theory with a landmark paper that he published in 1948. 


April 29, 2016: 48th Anniversary of first TV broadcasting of Les Shadoks

Nearly half a century later, France still fondly recalls Les Shadoks. With absurd maxims like “every advantage has its disadvantage, and vice versa," the bird-like creatures and their hilariously inane brand of logic struck a chord with French culture when they hit the screen in 1968.

April 28, 2016: Hertha Marks Ayrton’s 162nd birthday

Phoebe Sarah Hertha Ayrton (28 April 1854 – 23 August 1923), was a British engineer, mathematician, physicist, and inventor. Known in adult life as Hertha Ayrton, born Phoebe Sarah Marks, she was awarded the Hughes Medal by the Royal Society for her work on electric arcs and ripples in sand and water.



April 27, 2016: King's Day 2016

For King’s Day, or Koningsdag, the Dutch come together to celebrate the birth of their current king, Willem-Alexander. Celebrants wear orange in honor of the royal family’s house color, making King’s Day one of the most vivid of the year.

Freedom Day on 27 April is an annual celebration of South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. It is significant because it marks the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new constitution.

Pencho Petkov Slaveykov (Bulgarian: Пенчо Петков Славейков) (27 April 1866 O.S. – 10 June 1912 (O.S. 28 May 1912)) was a noted Bulgarian poet and one of the participants in the Misal ("Thought") circle. He was the youngest son of the writer Petko Slaveykov.


April 23, 2016: Celebrating William Shakespeare and St. George's Day 2016

Today's Doodle celebrates St. George, the patron saint of England and famous for slaying a dragon. This year he shares the stage with one of the most prolific voices of our time: William Shakespeare.


April 21, 2016: A #GoogleDoodle 4 Prince (1958-2016)

Google added a new Doodle to its website on Thursday, with a purple logo caught in a storm of “Purple Rain” in honor of Prince. The Doodle links to Prince-related music videos, news stories and websites.

Today, Turkey celebrates both its independence and its nation's youth — the future of the Turkish Republic. Sovereignty and Children's Day is a week-long celebration filled with games, dances, and a very special tradition. 


April 21, 2016: R.A. Kartini's 137th Birthday

Born to a family of Javanese aristocrats in 1879, R.A. Kartini came into the world straddling two cultures. She had a deep affinity for her family and traditional Javanese customs, but was profoundly influenced by her brushes with progressive Dutch ideas and Western literature. Like all girls of noble birth in Java at the time, Kartini was removed from school at the age of twelve, but continued to devour books and cultivate her views on the position of women in society and the Javanese people under Dutch rule.


 April 20, 2016: Mohammed Ghani Hikmat’s 87th birthday

Today's Doodle celebrates famed Iraqi sculptor Mohammed Ghani Hikmat. Hikmat created well-regarded works such as Scheherazade and Shahrayar, and the Fountain of Kahramana. Many of his sculptures were inspired by the stories in 1,001 Nights — widely know as the 'Tales of Arabian Nights'. An activist as well as an artist, Hikmat was responsible for reclaiming art taken from the National Museum of Iraq during the political turbulence in the early 2000s. His work is displayed in city centers and busy squares as an ode to his deep connection to Iraqi culture.


April 15, 2016: Samaun Samadikun’s 85th birthday

In today's doodle by Sophie Diao, we pay tribute to Samaun Samadikun, one of Indonesia’s brightest scientific minds. Born in 1931, he earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford, was a professor at Indonesia’s Bandung Institute of Technology and was the founder of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences. His contributions to microelectronics research, space programs, and university engineering still resonate today. A very Happy Birthday to Dr. Samadikun on what would have been his 85th birthday.

Songkran Day is one of the most significant holidays in Thailand. Typically celebrated between April 13th and 15th, it marks the beginning of the Thai New Year.

April 7, 2016: Pandit Ravi Shankar’s 96th birthday

Today we celebrate Pandit Ravi Shankar, who was born 96 years ago today. Shankar evangelized the use of Indian instruments in Western music, introducing the atmospheric hum of the sitar to audiences worldwide. He performed frequently with the violinist Yehudi Menuhin, and composed a concerto with sitar for the London Symphony Orchestra. Shankar also taught George Harrison of the Beatles how to play the sitar, and widely influenced popular music in the 1960s and 70s.


April 6, 2016: 120th Anniversary of First Modern Olympic Games

Today is the 120th anniversary of the first modern Olympic games, which started in Athens, Greece in 1896. Officially called the Games of the I Olympiad, the events took place inside the Panathenaic Stadium. 

April 4, 2016: Cazuza’s 58th birthday

Like so many great rock musicians, Agenor Miranda Araújo Neto, better known as Cazuza, began his career rattling the walls of neighborhood garages. A native of Rio de Janeiro, he fell in with the fledgling rock group Barão Vermelho when a friend urged him to audition for their open lead vocalist position. After landing a song on the soundtrack for a local film, the group played at the first ever Rock in Rio music festival, and their popularity soared. 

April 3, 2016: Start of the 100th tour of Flanders

Today marks the 100th tour of Flanders, or De Ronde van Vlaanderen, an annual springtime road cycling race held in Belgium since 1913. The race was put on hold during World War I, but has been held every year without interruption since 1919. The 2016 race covers 255 km (158 mi) with 18 categorized climbs and 7 flat cobblestoned sections — a notoriously bumpy ride for cyclists.
